Women on Boards: The 30% Coalition

The Thirty Percent Coalition is a unique and groundbreaking national organization of 80 members committed to the goal of women, including women of color, holding 30% of board seats across public companies. Founded in late 2011, the Coalition includes public companies, private equity, institutional investors, professional service firms, national women’s organizations, and government officials for the first time working together to drive the pace of change. The Coalition’s work is on the demand side of board diversity – influencing corporations to strengthen their efforts to increase the number of women on their boards. There is no other organization of this kind in the United States. www.30percentcoalition.org

Key differentiators:

The Coalition is unique and does not duplicate what other organizations are doing. Its goal is to leverage the power of diverse groups and individuals working together and to reinforce and support the important work being done by Coalition members.

The Coalition’s work is grounded in these four guiding principles:

  • Continued focus on the demand side: influencing corporations to strengthen their efforts to increase the number of women on their boards.

  • Focus on global nature of the issue: learning from what is working in other countries and recognizing the international scope of many companies.

  • Focus on the sources of political and financial power: organizing initiatives to harness the power of institutional investors, corporate leaders, and the public sector.

  • Using the collective clout of the Coalition’s members: leveraging the power of our diverse membership by working together on significant joint initiatives and reinforcing and supporting the important work being done by Coalition members individually.

The Coalition’s work is concentrated in three areas:

  • Institutional investors joining together to encourage companies to add women to their boards.

  • Acorporateleaderscommitteeworkingtomobilizeenlightenedcorporateleaderstoadvocateforboarddiversity

  • A public sector initiatives committee exploring ways to engage the public sector at the federal, state, and local

levels in increasing the pace of change
